February Bach Vespers: Carissimi’s Jephte

Dr. Elmer Thomas will conduct the chamber oratorio HISTORIA DI JEPHTE by Giacoma Carissimi at 5:30pm Sunday, February 12.

The brief work, about 25 minutes long, concerns Jephte’s vow with God to sacrifice, upon his return home, the first to come from his house if God will grant him victory in war. Alas, his only daughter (the role sung by Krista Cornish Scott) tragically is the first. Of all Carissimi’s chamber works, this is considered to be his “home run.”

The chamber ensemble is soprano soloist, six vocalists (Mary Tuuk, Kelly Haney, Sarah Kendall Jackson, Dashiel Waterbury, Ben Basone, Tom Sherwood) with a continuo group of four- harpsichord, organ, bassoon, and cello.

The oratorio will be performed as part of a candlelit Episcopal Vespers Service. For more information contact Dr. Carlton Monroe, Director of Music.
